ADOPTION COUNSELOR

OBJECTIVE	To improve the animal's chance of being adopted into a safe and loving home.
DIRECT SUPERVISOR	Shelter Manager or Executive Director
SPECIFIC DUTIES	Familarize yourself with the animals currently in adoption areas. Observe the interaction between potential adopters and shelter animals. Review adoption application for appropriate responses. Interview/screen the client regarding information given on application. Discuss what is known about the animal's health and background with the potential adopter. Educate the adopter in regard to proper pet care and ownership. Process paperwork for adoption, i.e. collect adoption fee. Socialize/exercise animals if customers are not in need of assistance.
QUALIFICATIONS	Love of animals and desire for close contact with them Knowledge of animal behavior, care, and breed characteristics, etc. Knowledge and acceptance of HS of S adoption guidelines and protocol Recognition and acceptance of euthanasia as a part of shelter operations Ability to discern appropriate adopter for an adoptable animal Ability to deal effectively with difficult people Ability to diplomatically decline an adopter Must pass approval from Manager or Director
TIME REQUIREMENTS	6 month commitment, 3-4 hours per week.
TRAINING	Shelter training (practical experience) use of policy guide
